Annual Campaign Spending Priorities:

Your Annual Campaign Donation “at work”:  Homework Help Center

Campaign Expenditure:  $10,000

It’s no news to most of you that Nathan Hale is one of the most respected high schools in Seattle:  average SAT scores are among the highest, class size low, and teachers highly motivated.

However, many of you might not know that the Seattle school district has slashed funding for high schools:  in fact, Nathan Hale has seen its school district funding reduced by almost $600,000 over the past five years.

One of the ways Nathan Hale teachers keep the academic standards at our school high, even in the face of such drastic budget cuts, is through the Homework Help Center.  Nestled in the Hale library, a dedicated staff of Hale teachers, and tutors from the UW, keep the Homework Center open Monday through Thursday. Assistance in all core subject areas and world languages is provided.

This is a tremendous service to students. Approximately five hundred individual students have taken advantage of tutoring, computers, library space, resources, etc. over the course of the year.  The Homework Center is an integral part of the Hale football program (eighty-five students), who use the HC before practice three days a week the entire season.  Most importantly, students know that the library is open after school every day (except Fridays). They have consistent, reliable access to computers, teachers, and tutors. It is a GREAT time and place to study.

But this service costs money, and the school has not always been able to keep the Homework Help center open, because the funds were not available!

The Annual Campaign is committed to giving money to help keep the Homework Help Center open next year. The first $100,000 of the Annual Campaign is dedicated to the Hale budget for teachers’ salaries and supplies; the next $5000 is dedicated to computer upgrades for classes; and the next $10,000 funds the homework help center.  These priorities are set by Principal Hechtman and school staff.

So, whether it's $25 or $250 -- maybe $10 a month? --  please donate online at www.nathanhale.org or pick up a pledge form at the school office today.  Pledge what you can afford - $10 a month? – and pat yourself on the back for helping provide tools that create an educated, skilled citizenry, at Nathan Hale.
